July 10th in Baha'i History

1926 – Shoghi Effendi wrote to Martha Root: Your letters...", he wrote to her on 10 July 1926, "have given me strength, joy and encouragement at a time when I felt depressed, tired and disheartened."
(Ruhiyyih Khanum, The Priceless Pearl, p. 103)

1909 – The Master is reported to have said:

"The Blessed Perfection does not mean His body. This body is now interred in the Holy Tomb. When we say the Blessed Perfection we mean the Reality, and the Reality of the Blessed Perfection is living and everlasting.

And later that day:

"I remember thee; do not be sorrowful. And I am in communion with thee in every world; grieve not.
"I hope thou mayest become, through the Favour and Bounty of the Blessed Perfection, the means of guiding others, and in the community of the world light a candle whose effulgence shall be everlasting." (The Diary of Juliet Thompson)

1912 – The Master was in NYC:

People from many different backgrounds continuously visited the Master. It seemed He was not silent for a moment. At one time He spoke of the discord among the various branches of Christianity, and at another, the degrees of oneness. He spoke of the despair of the material world and advanced decisive proofs of the necessity for divine power. The next moment He discussed the tribulations and persecutions suffered by the Ancient Beauty and the eventual victory of the Cause of God over all the powers of the world. At yet another moment He spoke of the veils which obscure the people at the time of the appearance of the Manifestation of the Preexistent Beauty. One of the explanations given today concerned the meaning of the Tablets of chrysolite mentioned in the Hidden Words,197 about which one of the friends had asked.
(Mahmud’s Diary)

1920 – The Guardian took a walk in the park around the Eiffel Tower in Paris France - On July 10 the girls and Florence went up in the Eiffel Tower and stayed over two hours. Afterward, they found Shoghi Effendi walking alone in the park under the Tower, and he gave them some of the Barbizon photographs. Perhaps he was lonely that day, and had gone there to capture the memory of the Master, photographed with companions in that same place. (Marzieh Gail, Arches of the Years, p. 184)

1969 – The Universal House of Justice increases the number of Counsellors:

70.1 With great joy we announce that we have decided to increase the total number of members of the Continental Boards of Counsellors for the Protection and Propagation of the Faith to thirty-eight
Messages 1963 to 1986 p.149

1989 – The Universal House of Justice calls on all National communities to eliminate illiteracy in the community:

The most immediate access to the dynamic influence of the sacred word is through reading. The ability to read is therefore a fundamental right and privilege of every human being. Bahá'u'lláh promotes this right in His command to parents to ensure the instruction of their sons and daughters in the "art of reading and writing". For this essential reason, in our last Ridvan message we called attention to the need for systematic attention to be given to eventually eliminating illiteracy from the Bahá'í community. This matter must assume its proper importance as a continuing objective of that community.
(The Universal House of Justice, Selected Six Year Plan Messages, p. 53)

1932 –Shoghi Effedi wrote this note to a Pioneer in Burma tasked with getting Baha’u’llah and the New Era Translated and Published in Burmese -

Dear and precious co-worker.
I am fully conscious of the difficulties that confront you as well as of your extreme desire to achieve the task I have requested you to perform. I continue to pray that every obstacle may be soon removed from your path and that your unsparing and exemplary efforts, in this as well in all other branches of Bahá'í activity, may be crowned with signal success.
Your loving brother,
Shoghi (Shoghi Effendi, Messages to the Indian Subcontinent, p. 84)

1939 – The Guardian answers some questions from the friends:

1 - Hour of Birth of the Bab - "The Báb born before dawn."
2 - Hour of Bahá'u'lláh's Birth - Bahá'u'lláh was born at dawn."
3 - No Explanation Given for 500,000 Year Period of Bahá'í Cycle:
'Abdu'l-Bahá has given no explanation regarding the 500,000 year period of the Bahá'í cycle. Individual believers are free to work out for themselves the explanation they desire, so long as they do not impose their views on others."
4 - Knowledge Consists of Twenty Seven Letters...':
"Regarding the passage beginning with the words: 'Knowledge consists of twenty-seven letters': this should not be interpreted literally. It only indicates the relative greatness and superiority of the new Revelation."
5 - Astrology - Non-Sensical Pseudo-science:
"Yes, the Guardian considers 'astrology' which is a pseudo-science, as for the most part 'non-sensical', as it is mostly made up of superstitious beliefs and practices."
(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi, dated July 10, 1939, Lights of Guidance, p. 516)

Thank you, Jack, for keeping us all updated regarding the history of this precious Cause. Did you ever hear from Radio Bahá’í?
