Lift up thy head from slumber....

Baha'i Scripture

O SON OF MAN!
Many a day hath passed over thee whilst thou hast busied thyself with thy fancies and idle imaginings. How long art thou to slumber on thy bed? Lift up thy head from slumber, for the Sun hath risen to the zenith, haply it may shine upon thee with the light of beauty.

Baseball, The Sacred and World Peace

Opening Day for Baseball is approaching rapidly.

I am a New York Met's fan...OK - there I said it...

I was born in Brooklyn. In the era (50's) where the guts of that esteemed Borough were ripped out when the beloved Brooklyn Dodgers were stolen by the rogue republic of California. People in Brooklyn, many of them my relatives were devastated.

A new Team the Met's came along in the 60's.  I was blessed to go to games with my Dad as a child in the Polo Grounds (former home of the NY Giants - also stolen by that rogue republic of California)

Side Note: I now live in Minneapolis former home of the NBA - Lakers (yes Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes - not Los Angeles). Also, stolen by the rogue republic of California..perhaps Mexico will take California back...

As I search my memory of those early Met's games it seems that I never missed a "twilight" double header with the Dodger's.  We rooted for the Met's but for sure we were there to see our former heroes  - Koufax, Drysdale, Johnny Padres, Tommy Davis... In my Little League when they had professional players visit - it was always members of the Dodger's when they were back in town - not the Met's..

I was privileged to find the Baha'i Faith and enroll in 1978. I served almost immediately on the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'i's of North Hempstead.  It was here that I learned that a Member of the Universal House of Justice,  H. Borah Kavelin had served on the Assembly some years earlier. I also learned from another Assembly member (a NY Yankee fan no less) that  H. Borah Kavelin was the Real Estate person who sold Ebbets Field the Home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.  I am very thankful that I was protected from these obvious tests in the early days of my being a Baha'i.

So here is the documentation of that whole Ebbets Field thing from Mr. Kavelin's obituary...

In 1981, I was privileged to be serving as a Caretaker of the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th St in Manhattan (I mention this because someday I think a plaque will need to be erected there).

My family lived in the Caretaker's apartment upstairs and in the rear of the Center.  I had just put my Daughter Abigail down for a nap when the phone rang.  The Assembly Treasurer, Hussein Ahdieh was on the line and asked that I come see him in the Assembly Chamber.

I crossed over to the Assembly chamber and when I entered, Hussein, told me to wash my hands. Unusual, yes, but I said sure.  And then it happened...

As I turned into the area where the Assembly meets.. I saw someone else in the chamber, Hussein said something to the effect that this was Universal House of  Justice, Member, Borah Kavelin,   Mr. Kavelin extended his hand to shake, I took it and shook it (generations of Dodger fans in my family, I am sure took notice and voted me out of the family).

At the same time as we shook hands, H. Borah Kavelin bestowed upon me one of the honors of my life.. he placed in my hand a Tablet written by Baha'u'llah after he had been poisoned (rare).  One never knows, when Sacred moments are going to come into your life...this was one of them. As I understood it, this Tablet was being taken back by him to the Holy Land. It had been in the possession of a Persian Baha'i family in Canada.

So, my dear Brooklynites, I must say that the man who sold Ebbets Field has an elevated position in this Met's fan's life. This is proof that World Peace is indeed possible, because when confronted with the Sacred all tribal differences are washed away and nothing but Unity is left in its wake.

Vegetarian?

Baha'i Graphic #115

Baha'i Text

'Abdu'l-Bahá has indicated that in the future human beings will be vegetarians, but abstention from eating meat is not a law of this Dispensation. The laws of God are attuned to the needs and possibilities of each age.

1945 - the condition of the world is too acute to permit of delay in giving them the direct teachings, associated with the name of Bahá'u'lláh

There is a great need for teaching the Cause at present; every Bahá'í should teach, and each one has his own capacities and can expect to reach certain souls who respond to his efforts. Your gift of writing should by all means be utilized in serving the Cause. Every one is perforce only an instrument in giving the Message which is more or less coloured by his own capacities and approach to life. There is no harm in this. You should write freely what you feel, what you wish to convey to the mind of the reader; afterwards you yourself, and those who pass upon Bahá'í manuscripts and publications, can make sure that all your points conform to the teachings. The way you give them out and present them is an individual matter and there is no objection to this at all.

He would not recommend fiction as a means of teaching; the condition of the world is too acute to permit of delay in giving them the direct teachings, associated with the name of Bahá'u'lláh. But any suitable approach to the Faith, which appeals to this or that group, is certainly worthy of effort, as we wish to bring the Cause to all men, in all walks of life, of all mentalities.[1]

[1 This advice was given to a believer who sought the counsel of the Guardian on ways one might use writing skills to teach the Faith. The believer proposed writing a novel in which the Bahá'í teachings and their source would be presented indirectly and in such a way as to stimulate curiosity and search by the reader. HJ5. 137.032]

1975 – The Universal House of Justice explains the term Covenant

A Covenant in the religious sense is a binding agreement between God and man, whereby God requires of man certain behaviour in return for which He guarantees certain blessings, or whereby He gives man certain bounties in return for which He takes from those who accept them an undertaking to behave in a certain way. There is, for example, the Greater Covenant which every Manifestation of God makes with His followers, promising that in the fulness of time a new Manifestation will be sent, and taking from them the undertaking to accept Him when this occurs. There is also the Lesser Covenant that a Manifestation of God makes with His followers that they will accept His appointed successor after Him. If they do so, the Faith can remain united and pure. If not, the Faith becomes divided and its force spent. It is a Covenant of this kind that Bahá'u'lláh made with His followers regarding 'Abdu'l-Bahá and that 'Abdu'l-Bahá perpetuated through the Administrative Order...

1992 Word of the secret execution of Mr. Bahman Samandari in Irán is made known, the first execution since 1988.

With sorrowful hearts we have received information of the execution in Evin Prison in Tehran on March 18, 1992, of Mr. Bahman Samandari, member of a distinguished Bahá'í  family who had been active in the affairs of the Bahá'í community. No reason for his execution has been given by the judicial or prison authorities, nor have they disclosed the location of his grave.
This tragic surprise is the more shocking for the fact that the whole matter has been shrouded in secrecy....
It is a source of outrage to the international Bahá'í community that after a cessation of executions of Bahá'ís for a period of three and a half years, such a brutal act could again be perpetrated against an innocent community. It belies the position publicly and repeatedly affirmed by the Iranian government that Bahá'ís are not being persecuted for their religious beliefs. April 8, 1992

1879 -  Martyrdom of Haji Siyyid Muhammad-Hasan (the King of the Martyrs) and Jahi Siyyid Hummad-Husayn (the Beloved of the Martyrs).

Death sentence was pronounced by Shaykh Muhammad-Baqir, "the Wolf". They were put in chains, decapited and dragged for public viewing.

"On the sixth day of their imprisonment, 17 March 1879, watched by the Raqsha (the She-Serpent) and the Dhi'b (the Wolf), these noble brothers, the twin 'shining lights', stood with their arms around each other ready to give their lives in the path of God. Their faces portrayed the beauty and the strength of their faith as they communed in spirit with their Lord, invoking Him to accept from them the sacrifice of their earthly lives and admit them into the spiritual realms of nearness to Him. At the time of execution, each one pleaded with the other to be the first. The younger brother, Mirza Hasan, the King of the Martyrs, was beheaded first, followed immediately by Mirza Husayn, the Beloved of the Martyrs."

Prayer for the Departed

Baha'i Scripture

(The Prayer for the Dead is to be used for Bahá'ís over the age of fifteen. "It is the only Bahá'í obligatory prayer which is to be recited in congregation; it is to be recited by one believer while all present stand. There is no requirement to face the Qiblih when reciting this prayers." - A Synopsis and Codification of the Kitáb-i-Aqdas)

O my God! This is Thy servant and the son of Thy servant who hath believed in Thee and in Thy signs, and set his face towards Thee, wholly detached from all except Thee. Thou art, verily, of those who show mercy the most merciful.

Deal with him, O Thou Who forgivest the sins of men and concealest their faults, as beseemeth the heaven of Thy bounty and the ocean of Thy grace. Grant him admission within the precincts of Thy transcendent mercy that was before the  40  foundation of earth and heaven. There is no God but Thee, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Generous.

Let him, then, repeat six times the greeting "Allah-u-Abha," and then repeat nineteen times each of the following verses:

We all, verily, worship God.

We all, verily, bow down before God.

We all, verily, are devoted unto God.

We all, verily, give praise unto God.

We all, verily, yield thanks unto God.

We all, verily, are patient in God.

1939 – The Time and Means Through which the Lesser and the Most Great Peace will be Established

With reference to the question you have asked concerning the time and means through which the Lesser and Most Great Peace, referred to by Bahá'u'lláh, will be established, following the coming World War: Your view that the Lesser Peace will come about through the political efforts of the states and nations of the world, and independently of any direct Bahá'í plan or effort, and the Most Great Peace be established through the instrumentality of the believers, and by the direct operation of the laws and principles revealed by Bahá'u'lláh and the functioning of the Universal House of Justice as the supreme organ of the Bahá'í superstate -- your view on this subject is quite correct and in full accord with the pronouncements of the Guardian as embodied in "The Unfoldment of World Civilization".

1985 – Letter from the Universal House of Justice on Human Suffering and the Reconstruction of society

The amelioration of the conditions of the world requires the reconstruction of human society and efforts to improve the material well-being of humanity. The Bahá'í approach to this task is evolutionary and multifaceted, involving not only the spiritual transformation of individuals but the establishment of an administrative system based on the application of justice, a system which is at once the "nucleus" and the "pattern" of the future World Order, together with the implementation of programmes of social and economic development that derive their impetus from the grass roots of the community.  Such an integrated approach will inevitably create a new world, a world where human dignity is restored and the burden of inequity is lifted from the shoulders of humanity. Then will the generations look back with heartfelt appreciation, for the sacrifices made by Bahá'ís and non-Bahá'ís alike, during this most turbulent period in human history.

1932 – The present condition of the world….should awaken the youth

The present condition of the world -- its economic instability, social dissensions, political dissatisfaction and international distrust -- should awaken the youth from their slumber and make them inquire what the future is going to bring. It is surely they who will suffer most if some calamity sweep over the world. They should therefore open their eyes to the existing conditions, study the evil forces that are at play and then with a concerted effort arise and bring about the necessary reforms -- reforms that shall contain within their scope the spiritual as well as social and political phases of human life.

12 Mar 1923 Shoghi Effendi calls for the establishment of Local and National Bahá'í Funds.

3/12/23 The Guardian pens a letter which becomes Baha'i Administration P.34-43 about:

The condition of the world; erection of administrative framework: Local and National Assemblies, the Fund; the importance of teaching. Referred to as "fresh and momentous decisions", undertaken in accordance with the provisions of the Aqdas. Reference to Spiritual Assemblies as precursors to Houses of Justice, and the foundation of the Master's Will. Outlines duties of Spiritual Assemblies. Emphasizes that this is an age of transition, and that the implications of the Will have not yet been fully grasped. "The need for the centralization of authority in the NSA, and the concentration of power in the various local Assemblies, is made manifest when we reflect that the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh is still in its age of tender growth and in a stage of transition; when we remember that the full implications and the exact significance of the Master's world-wide instructions, as laid down in His Will, are as yet not fully grasped, and the whole Movement has not sufficiently crystallized in the eyes of the world." Warns against the forces of separation and sectarian tendencies, "lest extreme orthodoxy on one hand, and irresponsible freedom on the other, cause it to deviate from that Straight Path which alone can lead it to success." World Order of Baha'u'llah pages 161-206

(Misc Baha'i, Chronology of Major Letters of the Guardian)

A passage from that work:

That the forces of irreligion, of a purely materialistic philosophy, of unconcealed paganism have been unloosed, are now spreading, and, by consolidating themselves, are beginning to invade some of the most powerful Christian institutions of the western world, no unbiased observer can fail to admit. That these institutions are becoming increasingly restive, that a few among them are already dimly aware of the pervasive influence of the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh, that they will, as their inherent strength deteriorates and their discipline relaxes, regard with deepening dismay the rise of His New World Order, and will gradually determine to assail it, that such an opposition will in turn accelerate their decline, few, if any, among those who are attentively watching the progress of His Faith would be inclined to question.

1866 - Baha'u'llah moves His family to the house of Rida Big

With the revelation of the Suriy-i-Amr and Mirza Yahya's reactions, the contest between the forces of light and darkness came to a head. Embarking on an action reminiscent of His solitary retirement to the mountains of Kurdistan when the unfaithful were shamefully destroying the Cause of God, Bahá'u'lláh, who at this time was residing in the house of Amru'llah, withdrew with His family to the nearby house of Rida Big which was rented by His order, and refused to associate with anybody. This was on 10 March 1866. The reason for this withdrawal, which fortunately was of short duration, was similar to that which had motivated Him to retire to Kurdistan a decade earlier: namely, to relieve the tension and alleviate the feelings of enmity which during the course of years had been engendered in the hearts of some by Mirza Yahya and were fanned into flame by his latest actions.

1977 - Prohibition on Representing Manifestations of God in Paintings or Drawings Applies to all Manifestations

The prohibition on representing the Manifestation of God in paintings and drawings or in dramatic presentations applies to all the Manifestations of God. There are, of course, great and wonderful works of art of past Dispensations, many of which portrayed the Manifestations of God in a spirit of reverence and love. In this Dispensation however the greater maturity of mankind and the greater awareness of the relationship between the Supreme Manifestation and His servants enable us to realize the impossibility of representing, in any human form, whether pictorially, in sculpture or in dramatic representation, the Person of God's Manifestations. In stating the Bahá'í prohibition, the beloved Guardian pointed out this impossibility.

Source Unknown: If you know who created this work, please advise so proper attribution may be given.

Baha'i Scripture

The third Glad-Tidings concerneth the study of divers languages. This decree hath formerly streamed forth from the Pen of the Most High: It behoveth the sovereigns of the world -- may God assist them -- or the ministers of the earth to take counsel together and to adopt one of the existing languages or a new one to be taught to children in schools throughout the world, and likewise one script. Thus the whole earth will come to be regarded as one country. Well is it with him who hearkeneth unto His Call and observeth that whereunto he is bidden by God, the Lord of the Mighty Throne.
